CAP Center offers educational classes on child abuse prevention, teen dating violence, Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome prevention. Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention classes aim to prevent babies from being shaken by teaching parents and caregivers how to cope with a crying baby, the number one trigger for this violent form of child abuse. Through an exclusive DISD contract, CAP Center teaches students and staff on various high school campuses the dangers of shaking a baby. In 2009, CAP Center educated over 1,100 teens, parents, child care providers, and community members.


Definition of long-term success:
Decreased incidence of child maltreatment in Dallas County.
Definition of short-term success:
Program participants will have increased knowledge of strategies to help them cope with a crying baby.

Program participants will have increased knowledge of why babies cry was improved as a result of receiving information.

Program participants will believe that the information provided during educational classes will positively change their actions towards children.

Program participants will believe that the information provided during educational classes will increase their knowledge about why it is important
to never shake a baby.
Success monitored by:
Number of teen parents and parents educated
2. Class evaluations
3. Renewal of DISD contract
4. Brochure sales
5. Curriculum modifications as necessary
Evidence of success:
Evaluation of the 2009 educational classes indicates:
• 81% of program participants believed that the information provided would help them cope with a crying baby
• 79% of program participants believed that their understanding of why babies cry was improved as a result
of receiving information
• 83% of program participants believed that the information provided will positively change their actions towards children
• 83% of program participants believed that the information increased their knowledge about why it is important
to never shake a baby
