FAQs for Nonprofits

What is DonorBridge?

DonorBridge is a searchable online database with detailed information about nonprofits within the Dallas and Fort Worth region, as well as general information about every nonprofit in the United States. DonorBridge contains clear, comparative and reliable data in a user-friendly format provided at no charge to the user. Non-profits can set up their online profile to include detailed information about their mission, management, governance and programs offered to the DFW community. For donors, and others interested in supporting nonprofits, DonorBridge provides donors with the ability to make informed decisions about their charitable giving. DonorBridge is run by Communities Foundation of Texas, with the support of The Dallas Foundation and the Center for Nonprofit Management.

How is it different from GuideStar or Charity Navigator?

DonorBridge contains financial information directly from the IRS on every nonprofit in the United States. Nonprofits in North Texas, specifically the DFW area, can establish an online profile where they can provide additional information and upload documentation. Unlike other similar sites, DonorBridge also accepts online donations for the nonprofits.

What information can I find on a nonprofit’s profile?

DonorBridge contains detailed information about the nonprofit in the following sections:

  • General - Contact information, year incorporated and organizational classifications;
  • Statements – Includes statements such as the Mission Statement, Impact Statement, Needs Statement, Background and opening comments from the Executive Director and Board Chair;
  • Management – Details on the number of staff, consultants and volunteers, the Strategic and Fundraising Plans along with other management policies and procedures;
  • Staff – Details on the senior management team of the organization;
  • Board - Outlines the capacity and involvement of the organization’s board;
  • Programs – Description on the programs and activities of the nonprofit;
  • Documents – Documentation uploaded by the nonprofit. Can be copies of tax returns, video clips, pictures, brochures, annual reports, etc.;
  • Financial – Provides detailed financial information as reported on the latest three years of IRS tax return form 990.

The information is provided on a voluntary basis by nonprofits in the North Texas area.  Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) and The Center for Nonprofit Management (CNM) staff review and verify reported information annually. DonorBridge does not rate or rank nonprofits.

How many organizations are represented?

All organizations in the United States that file a 990 return with the IRS are available through DonorBridge. Nonprofits in North Texas, specifically the DFW area, can establish an online profile, where they can provide additional information and upload documentation.

How can I find my favorite nonprofit?

DonorBridge allows you to search for nonprofits by name, or you can perform an advanced search that allows you to search by name, location (city, state and zip), proximity to you, and by key word, which scans all descriptive fields in a program description for those particular key words. Users can also look up nonprofits by category, which returns all nonprofits with programs and services under a particular category, or by Beneficiary which are displays those nonprofits that provide services for specific groups of people.  For example, beneficiaries could include youth, senior citizens, or military/veterans.

Why can’t I see all the details on some nonprofits?

Basic information on all nonprofits is available to anyone that visits DonorBridge. Nonprofits with approved profiles will have even more organizational details available to the public user. Individuals who sign up for a DonorBridge login are given access to more information than in the “public” view, and have the ability to print a profile report, as well as access to other features.

Can I make donations through DonorBridge?

Yes, you can make credit card donations to nonprofits that have completed their profiles. Some nonprofits have elected to redirect giving to their own site. If they prefer to use DonorBridge, donations will be processed through Communities Foundation of Texas.  Donations will appear on credit card statements, as being payable to “CFTexas.” CFT will forward the donated funds to the nonprofit, and will provide the official gift substantiation/tax receipt back to the donor. The recipient nonprofit organization is also provided the donor’s contact information (unless the donor has requested to remain anonymous), and is welcomed to thank the donor for their generous gift.

CFT cannot process a gift through DonorBridge where there is personal gain or purchase (i.e. event tickets, auction items, T-shirt purchase, membership dues, etc.).  CFT does not provide legal, tax, financial, or any other types of advice to prospective donors and suggests that all prospective donors seek the assistance of legal, tax, and financial advisors of their choice concerning matters related to their proposed gifts.

Do I have to have a login to donate?

No, you can make donations without a login and password. However, we want to encourage donors to sign up for a DonorBridge login, as it will give you access to more information on the nonprofits profiles.

How will I know my gift was received?

Donations made through the DonorBridge website will be processed through the Communities Foundation of Texas. Donors will receive an acknowledgement email, as well as an official gift substantiation/tax receipt. Donations will appear on credit card statements as being payable to “CFT.” The nonprofit will be notified and given the donor’s contact information, unless you have stated that you wish to remain anonymous. If you do not receive an email receipt, please contact CFT directly at donorservices@cftexas.org.

Can I make an online gift in honor of or in memory of someone?

Yes, you can make a donation to a nonprofit organization in honor or in memory of someone. Please specify that information when completing the online form.

I have established a fund at CFT and/or The Dallas Foundation. Can I make grant recommendations through DonorBridge?

If I give a gift online, can I specify what it should be used for?
