The Texas High School Project has committed more than $58 million in grant funds to educational institutions and programs designed to achieve the goals of its Early College High Schools, Redesigned High Schools, New Schools, Texas Science Technology Engineering and Math, and Education Leadership projects. Almost $38 million of the funds have already been awarded. Private funds from the THSP were made to programs that were pre-selected. However, grant applications can still be made for public funds provided by the Texas Education Agency.

The following is a list of recipients and the programs that are being funded:

EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOLS
$9.5 Million Committed - $8.4 Million Awarded

  • Two grants totaling $1.9 million to the University of Texas System in collaboration with the University of Texas San Antonio to open three Early College High Schools in San Antonio on the campuses of East Central High School, Southside High School and Southwest High School.
  • A grant of $1.2 million to the University of Texas System to open two Early College High Schools on the campus of the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg.
  • A grant of $1.8 million to the University of North Texas System to open three Early College High Schools on the campuses of Mountain View College in Dallas, Tarrant County Community College in Fort Worth and Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch.
  • A grant of $1.2 million to the Texas A&M University System to open two Early College High Schools on the campuses of Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Texas A&M International in Laredo.
  • A grant of $1.8 million to the Texas Association of Community Colleges to open three Early College High Schools on the campuses of Del Mar Community College in Corpus Christi, El Paso Community College in El Paso and Southeast Community College in Houston.
  • Planning grants of $450,000 to various institutions of higher learning.

REDESIGNED HIGH SCHOOLS
$10.9 Million Committed - $9 Million Awarded

  • A grant of $1,625,000 to the Austin Independent School District to redesign Akins High School in Austin.
  • A grant of $1,169,000 to the Fort Worth Independent School District to redesign Dunbar High School in Fort Worth.
  • A grant of $640,000 to the San Antonio Independent School District to redesign Sam Houston High School in San Antonio.
  • A grant of $1,784,000 to Ysleta Independent School District to redesign Bel Air High School in El Paso.
  • A grant of $2,579,150 to the Southern Regional Education Board to provide technical assistance to Akins High School in Austin, Dunbar High School in Fort Worth, Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, and Bel Air High School in El Paso.
  • Planning grants of $430,000 to various ISDs.

NEW and CHARTER SCHOOLS
$10.6 Million Committed - $9.5 Million Awarded

  • A grant of $782,450 to UPLIFT Education to add high school grades to Peak Academy in Dallas.
  • A grant of $1.4 million to UPLIFT Education to open two new charter high schools in Dallas.
  • A grant of $2.8 million to YES College Preparatory School to open four new charter high schools in Houston.
  • A grant of $1.4 million to IDEA Academy to open two new charter high schools in the Rio Grande Valley.
  • A grant of $75,000 to IDEA Academy to add high school grades to their current school in Donna.
  • A grant of $595,000 to KIPP Aspire Academy to open one new charter high school in San Antonio.
  • A grant of $900,000 to The Asia Society to open two new international charter high schools along the Texas/Mexico border.
  • A grant of $500,000 to UPLIFT Education to start a charter management organization and to open an International Baccalaureate Lab to support charter schools.
  • Planning grants of $30,000 to charter management organizations.

TEXAS SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATH
$26 Million Committed - $9.6 Million Awarded

  • A grant of $40,000 to El Paso Education Initiative to examine the feasibility of opening a charter high school in El Paso.
  • A grant of $80,000 to the New Technology Foundation to examine the feasibility of opening two STEM academies in Texas.

EDUCATION LEADERSHIP
$1.7 Million Committed - $1.4 Million Awarded

  • A grant of $458,000 to Region XIII to provide personalized coaching for principals across the state of Texas.
  • Three grants totaling $800,000 to establish Principal Certification Programs at the University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas Tech University.
