As we plan for our state’s future, every Texan counts. The 2020 Census will determine not only the representation of Texans in our political system, but also billions of dollars in federal aid, including support for health care, housing, education, transportation, food and more for the next decade. Ensuring a full count of everyone in our state is critical to our continued success.

For a state as geographically large as Texas, we face a major challenge to get an accurate, complete count of our diverse population – a challenge made greater due to new approaches to completing the Census and heightened sensitivity around immigration status. Hard-to-count communities require a greater need for direct support and targeted outreach.

The 2020 Texas Counts Campaign (TCC) has been created in partnership with the Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT), Texas Education Grantmakers Advocacy Consortium (TEGAC) and the Center for Public Policy Priorities (CPPP) to organize community leaders across our state to ensure a fair and accurate census.

As a coordinated, but separate, effort, the Communities Foundation of Texas has established a statewide Texas Counts Pooled Fund (TCPF) to provide critical funds that will enable local communities to target outreach efforts and implement best practices that will ensure a fair and accurate count for Texas.

Over the next 12 months, as the statewide TCC works to provide greater visibility, coordination, and execution of the 2020 Census, the TCPF will invest in underfunded hard-to-count communities.

For more information about how you or your organization can support the TCC, how our statewide campaign and pooled fund are structured, or other topics related to our Census efforts, please contact Amy Desler at adesler@cftexas.org.
