Geary’s Gift Grand Piano with Guidance from CFT
FOR THE GEARYS, GIVING BACK is all in the family. Charlotte W. and Joseph W. Geary instilled a tradition of philanthropy in their children, so when siblings Michael Geary, Kelley Burks, Kathy Vaughan and Colleen Patton were trying to figure out what to do with their parents’ Baldwin grand piano, the decision to donate it was an easy one to make. They turned to CFT to help them decide which nonprofit would be the next home for their family’s piano.
The Gearys knew that even though they weren’t sure how to go about making the gift, the experts at CFT would be able to advise them and facilitate the donation. And after reviewing a list of nonprofits that CFT provided to them, the siblings unanimously chose Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts as the recipient for their donation. While their parents started a fund at Communities Foundation of Texas years ago, Michael, Kelley, Kathy and Colleen are new fund holders through an estate gift from them. But the younger Gearys aren’t strangers to CFT. Michael has been actively involved in our professional advisor network, and has been a member of the advisory council for more than five years.
In addition to gifting the piano, each of the Geary siblings gave Booker T. Washington High School a grant to cover the costs of moving it from the family home to the school, as well as its refurbishment and any future maintenance. This gift, given in loving memory of their parents, will be cherished and used by students for many years to come.
