Alternative

A private foundation can be a great vehicle for charitable giving, but sometimes the process of managing the foundation’s operation can diminish the joy of giving or become a burden.

CFT can work with you to find a solution that makes your giving simple and fulfilling.

Factors Affecting Private Foundations

  • Rising operational and investment management costs
  • Keeping up with new and changing government regulations
  • Difficult to determine good grantmaking opportunities andmeet the annual 5% payout requirement
  • Foundation founder prefers that the family focus on philanthropy rather than on investments and administration
  • Different generational preferences for involvement

In any of these above scenarios, CFT has options for you.

OPTION ONE OPTION TWO OPTION THREE
Convert to a Donor-Advised Fund Payout to a Fund Utilize the CFT Services

Roll over your private foundation into a named donor-advised fund, and let our experienced staff help you achieve your charitable goals. Your donor-advised fund can maintain the same name, identity and charitable goals as your foundation. Continue your charitable giving without the burdensome administrative costs, IRS requirements, compliance regulations and excise tax payments associated with a private foundation. We can help facilitate all the necessary legal and administrative steps for you.

If you have trouble finding compelling grantmaking opportunities and meeting your private foundation’s annual 5% payout requirement, CFT can assist by accepting contributions. Because the private foundation’s contribution to CFT is a qualifying distribution, it counts toward the 5% payout. When you donate all or part of your 5% payout to a donor-advised fund, we can help you distribute the money with greater flexibility. Or you can donate to our Community Impact Fund, and the money will be distributed through our local grantmaking strategies.

Private foundations can take advantage of our Customized Philanthropy Services. We offer guidance on the art and science of giving effectively and provide fullservice support for your grantmaking. Our professional, dedicated staff can help you accomplish your giving goals— from due diligence on local nonprofits to executing grant agreements.
