Time-Poor or Money-Poor

Princeton University's Eldar Shafir Discussed the 'Scarcity Mindset'

ON APRIL 24, 2014, CFTpresented acclaimed author Eldar Shafir as part of its annual series Cause-Minded Conversations. Shafir is co-author of Scarcity: Why Having So Little Means So Much, a groundbreaking look at how the lack of time, money, food or companionship can create a debilitating “scarcity mindset” in people. Shafir first gave an overview of his book and then was interviewed by Krys Boyd, host and managing editor of KERA-FM’s midday talk show Think.“No matter if you’re time-poor or money-poor, the psychology of not having enough turns into hurtful behavior,” said Shafir. “Scarcity causes you to make trade-offs which are cognitively demanding.”

The host committee for CFT’s Cause-Minded Conversations series includes Jennifer Ware, YWCA of Dallas; Kimberly Williams, Interfaith Housing Coalition; Michael Fleisher, Jewish Family Service, Larry James, CitySquare; Lisa Hembry, Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT); Molly Bogen, The Senior Source; and Bill Hall, Dallas Habitat for Humanity. The next Cause-Minded Conversation is a Spotlight on the Arts on June 9 at 4:00 p.m.
