What is a scholarship fund?
Scholarship funds are charitable accounts established at Communities Foundation of Texas by generous individuals, corporations or organizations for the purpose of assisting students in paying for their education. Scholarships do not need to be repaid.

How are eligibility requirements determined?
Each individual, corporation or organization determines the eligibility criteria when the scholarship fund is established. However, before launching any scholarship program Communities Foundation of Texas' board of trustees reviews and approves the eligibility criteria to ensure that it is fair and non-discriminatory. Some scholarship funds support residents of a city or county; others are directed to students interested in a specific field of study. Although each scholarship takes financial need into consideration, some scholarships also focus on academic achievement, academic potential or community services.

How do I know if I am eligible to apply?
Basic eligibility criteria are listed in the scholarship description(s) found in our online application portal. Thoroughly read each scholarship program's basic eligibility requirements to identify the scholarships for which you may be eligible.

Are only graduating high school seniors eligible?
No. While many of our scholarships are for graduating high school seniors, others are open to students already enrolled in college or adults who want to go back to school.

What if I am not a "straight A" student?
There are a variety of scholarshipsavailable, including ones for part-time students and students who are likely not to receive other scholarships because of their grades. These scholarships are looking for applicants that are likely to succeed in college and are approaching their studies with purpose and dedication. Read all scholarship descriptions carefully to determine which eligibility criteria you meet and what program(s) you can apply for.

What if I'm attending a vocational school?
Several of our scholarships supporting students who choose to pursue post-secondary educational opportunities other than traditional four-year colleges and Universities. Descriptions of scholarships can be found through our online application portal and should mention if a specific scholarship is available to students attending trade/vocational schools. All schools and programs must be accredited, licensed and approved by the scholarship committee.

Do you have scholarships for graduate or professional programs?
Yes. Currently, we have several scholarships available to graduate students or other professional programs. Descriptions of scholarships can be found through our online application portal and should mention if a specific scholarship is available to graduate students or adults pursuing professional programs.

How do I apply to your online scholarships?
For a detailed guide to walking you through the steps of applying online, please refer to our Application Guide.

What is the CFT General Application?
The General Application is a more efficient way for students to apply for scholarships. Rather than filling out individual applications for each scholarship, students fill out one general application that can match them to multiple scholarship opportunities. When the general application is complete, you will then be able to apply to individual scholarships, answering the questions that are specific to each scholarship.

What will I need to complete the CFT General Application?
The General Application has many fields which are not required, however, we recommend you complete as many fields as possible in order to provide a more robust application for committees to review. Doing so will enhance your application greatly. You ay want to pull together the following information prior to starting your General Application:

  • Digital Copy of a High School or College Transcript
  • SAT/ACT Scores
  • Resume with awards, extracurricular activities, community service, etc.
  • Information about the education programs or schools you have applied to or are currently attending
  • The names and email addresses for those who will be providing a letter of recommendation (we recommend requesting in person in advance)

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?
Yes. You are encouraged to apply to as many scholarships as you'd like, provided you are eligible. Please review the criteria to ensure the scholarship is a good match for you prior to applying.

Can I receive more than one scholarship?
Yes, each scholarship committee is different and selects the best candidates within the pool of applicants available to them. If you are a strong candidate, it is possible you will be selected for multiple awards.

When will I be notified?
Notification times vary, but a general rule of thumb is that notifications will be sent out six weeks after the application deadline.

Prior to Receiving your Initial Payment: Please make sure that you have completed the following required documentation in order to initiate release of your first scholarship payment to your school:

  • Terms and Conditions: It is important that you keep a copy of this, as it will provide you with a list of documentation you will be required to submit to release any future payments to your school.

Any updates to your contact information or degree plan can be sent to scholarships@cftexas.org.

After the first payment: If you have a multi-term scholarship (more than one payment) you will need to take action to activate future payments to your school. Generally, most students are required to submit the following documentation, but you will need to check your Terms and Conditions to verify any different or additional items:

  • Transcript: Students whose Terms and Conditions require specific GPA minimums will be required to submit a copy of their transcript at the end of each semester to initiate the upcoming semester's payment. CFT will accept screenshots from the student's online account as long as the student's name and/or student identification number are captured in the image. Transcripts can be sent to scholarships@cftexas.org.
  • Schedule for Upcoming Semester: Students whos Terms and Conditions require specific semester hour enrollment minimums will be required to submit a copy of their upcoming semester's schedule at the end of each semester to initiate the upcoming semester's payment. These can be sent to scholarships@cftexas.org and they will be forwarded to the donor of your scholarship fund on your behalf.

After the final payment: We would like to keep in touch with past recipients of CFT-administered scholarships! Send Abigail Hazlett an update so we can know how you are doing.

I have moved. How do I update my contact information?
You can send updates to your information to scholarships@cftexas.org at any time. Please make sure we have a current mailing address, home address, phone number and preferred email. This is very important because regular notifications and reminders will be sent out via email; we may also need to contact you directly by phone if we have any questions regarding your scholarship.

If I am awarded a scholarship, do I get the check?
No, it is against the community foundation's policies to pay scholarships directly to students. Should you be awarded, scholarship payments will be sent to your college financial aid office after you submit verification of admission and enrollment.

If I receive a scholarship one year, will I automatically receive an award the following year?
No. However, some scholarships allow prior recipients to reapply in competition with other applicants and some scholarships are renewable, provided that recipients meet renewal eligibility requirements. Should you be awarded, your award letter will inform you if your scholarship is renewable.

I have received a renewable scholarship, do I submit renewal paperwork online?
Yes, all students receiving a renewable scholarship will need to re-apply to the scholarship via our online application portal when the next year's scholarship cycle opens.

If I want to send a thank you note, where do I send it?
You may send them to scholarships@cftexas.org and we will forward your thank you note to the selection committee or donor as appropriate. Be sure to include the name of your scholarship in the note.
